Summer is here and hay harvest is going well. The weather has been
kind in many ways to us farmers and hard in others. Long spells of dry weather
has enabled the work to be done with little pressure but the amount of yield is
low due to the lack of rain right from the start of the year.
The patchwork of the fields in North Devon is at its best at the moment and visitors can experience
vistas like nowhere else. The dark green of the wheat contrasting with the pale
harvested grass divided by the multi species hedges rich in plant and animal
diversity and unique to this area.
The coastline is there to cool down on a hot day and Exmoor is also refreshing with its walks across open countryside and streams to sit beside and rest.
The heather has just started to flower and orchids are visible on some of the wet or boggy areas. Cows and sheep are out grazing to complete the countryside tapestry. Not forgetting the ponies
roaming for everyone to see on Exmoor.
The corn harvest is just around the corner and already fields of barley
are ripening and you will be able to see combines at work.
The gardens open to the public in North Devon are now at their best with roses and cottage gardens
in full flower, you can make a full day at some of these beautiful places. Many
have special areas for children to play and the RHS is opening its doors to dog
owners now on certain days of the week. Come and share our beautiful space!
